All of us use online communication platforms like social media and email. Mass communication provides great value: the ability to troubleshoot problems with our community, share good news, and organize. But there are also risks to using these platforms: a permanent record of hot takes, misinterpreted tone, and runaway threads.
During this COSI, librarians who fought for the reinstatement of the Faculty Conversations email list will use it as an example of the joys, chagrin, envy, and sometimes chaos of online communication. We will facilitate a conversation about this kind of mass communication and its risks and rewards to our community.
