This dissertation analyzes the impact of German anthropology and natural history on colonialism and nationalism in Germany, Spain, the Philippines, and the United States during the second half of the nineteenth-century.

This research note presents discussions about and by Filipino revolutionaries in the Proceedings of the Berlin Society for Anthropology, Ethnology, and Prehistory (Verhandlungen der Berliner Gesellschaft für Anthropologie, Ethnologie und Urgeschichte), which were published from 1897 to 1900 in the Imperial German Journal of Ethnology (Zeitschrift für Ethnologie), a periodical produced by the German Society for Anthropology, Ethnology, and Prehistory (Deutsche Gesellschaft für Anthropologie, Ethnologie und Urgeschichte). It contextualizes and translates five Communications: two describing the life and work of José Rizal, and three letters from Mariano Ponce, Felipe Agoncillo, Emiliano Riego de Dios, and Vicente Lukban.

Jose Rizal's place in the history of Philippine anthropology is under-appreciated. The article tries to correct this by tracking Rizal's sojourn in Imperial Germany in 1886-87; his contacts with some of the most important late nineteenth-century German scientists; his participation in German learned societies; his collaborative work with German scholars in collecting anthropological artifacts; and his readings and attempts to translate works like Theodor Waitz' Anthropologie der Naturvolker (1858-71).

This professorial address argues that the genealogy of Southeast Asian studies must be traced to the work carried out by Southeast Asians themselves in the context of the practice and formation of local or national scholarship. The argument is illustrated by the historical formation of what can be called "Southeast Asian studies" in the Philippines.

This article argues that some of the newspapers of late Spanish colonial Manila should be considered as being politically contentious, and instruments of propaganda, along with La Solidaridad. Specifically, the article documents Isabelo de los Reyes's participation in the press of this period, particularly though not exclusively in bilingual newspapers, and argues that this fact has not been fully recognized, in part because of his many pseudonyms and in part because of the political imperative to propagandize about censorship in the colonial press.
