First Generation Professional Reflections: Feeling Insecure and Unsure

Conversation with Dennis Denman, Seattle Central Director of Student Leadership

May 19, 2022

Feelings of nervousness, stress, not being enough, and “can I really do this?” are part of the first-generation college student experience. The same can be said for first-generation professionals who work on college campuses. As a 1st gen student turned 1st gen professional, I have to tell myself to “chill out, they not gone fire you (today)” as a daily affirmation to navigate the internal monologues of “getting caught and I’m not supposed to be here” scenes that play out in my head like I’m on Issa Rae’s HBO show Insecure (I know I’m not the only one). Join us to focus on navigating the job, unpacking the thoughts, and normalizing the conversations of first generation students and professionals.
