CUL 101: Food Theory I: Herb & Spice Project

on searching library tools for your herb & spice project

Hello Culinary students! I'm Katy, the librarian for the Culinary department. I've collected the following tools and sources for you to use as you complete this project.

A note on searching library stuff for the project: I have found that because students are used to web searching with Google, they tend to expect library tools to work the same way. You get a list of sources, the first one is wikipedia and the rest are pretty relevant to your search. It feels like you found "the answer" with Google.

Tools in the library work differently, and in general, "stuff" you find in the library needs to be pieced together in order to complete the project well and to specifications. You likely won't find many or even one source that tells you "the answer" to all the prompts on the assignment. Rather, you will find many sources with a little information in each, and you will put them together in your paper and presentation. This is what college research looks like!

So you will need to be curious and investigative as you try out the tools below. Look at your search results with wonder! And if you feel stuck or like "there's nothing on my topic," make an appointment with me.

Search the Library Catalog to find books. While the library is closed, you can request print books and pick them up every Wednesday. See the our Remote Library Services page for details on how to do that.

To see only electronic results, use the "Available Online" limiter.

The library subscribes to the following ebook collections that may be useful for your project. Keep in mind that books generally have lots of depth, so you probably won't find one that's entirely about your topic. You may find one with some information on your topic, though.

Librarians are providing one-on-one research appointments via Zoom video conference or on the phone.

Research appointments can help you select a research topic, find credible sources for a paper, create citations for your sources, or just talk through something you feel "stuck" on in your research.

After you schedule an appointment, you will get a confirmation email with a link to the Zoom meeting room and a phone number with a passcode.

Note: We are willing to figure out a better time to help you if these hours don't work with your schedule. Just send us an email or leave a voice message so we can set up a mutually convenient time.
